FAQ

Questions people actually ask

If yours isn't here, call and ask. We don't mind the question.

What areas do you cover?

Tucson and the surrounding Pima County communities — Oro Valley, Marana, Catalina Foothills, Vail, Green Valley, Sahuarita, SaddleBrooke and Corona de Tucson. If you're near the edge of that, call and ask. We'd rather tell you honestly than have you guess.

How much does it cost?

House calls are billed hourly with a one-hour minimum, and most common jobs have a published starting price. Larger projects like whole-home ethernet or a multi-camera system are quoted in writing after we've walked the house. You always get the number before any work starts.

Can you come today?

Often, if we have the slot. Same-day and evening appointments happen regularly, but they depend on what's already booked. Call rather than using the form if it's urgent.

Do I need to buy the equipment before you arrive?

No, and we'd rather you didn't guess. Tell us the problem and we'll recommend what actually fits your house — sometimes that's gear you already own, and sometimes the thing you were about to buy would have made it worse.

What if you can't fix it?

You don't pay for labor on something we couldn't solve — just the service call that got us out there. And we'll tell you what would fix it, even when that means someone other than us.

Are you insured?

Yes. We're a Tucson-based, insured business working in people's homes, and we take that seriously.

Do you install alarm systems?

No. We install and configure security cameras, video doorbells and smart locks. Monitored burglar alarm systems are separately regulated in Arizona and need a different credential than ours, so we leave those to alarm companies — and we'll make sure everything else in your house works alongside whichever one you use.

Can you help someone who isn't good with technology?

That's a large part of what we do, and it's some of our favorite work. We go at your pace, skip the jargon, and leave written notes for the specific things we covered. There's no such thing as a question that's too basic.

Can family arrange a visit for a parent?

Yes, and it happens constantly — often from out of state. You can book and pay remotely while we work with your parent in their home, and with their say-so we'll update you afterward.

Do you work with businesses?

Yes. Office networks, guest Wi-Fi, POS systems, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, cameras and backups. No monthly contract required — call us when you need us. There's a plan available if you'd rather have priority response, but it's optional.

How do I pay?

Card, tap or bank transfer when the work is done. You get an itemized receipt showing labor and any parts at cost plus a stated markup.

Do you charge just to come out?

There's a service call fee that covers the drive and the diagnosis, and it's waived when you book the work with us on the same visit. So if we fix it while we're there, it costs you nothing extra.

And we'll tell you what would fix it, even when that means someone other than us.

  1. Every visit starts with the service call, which covers the drive and the diagnosis.
  2. Book the work on the same visit and that fee is waived. You pay for the labor and any parts.
  3. If we couldn't solve it, there's no labor charge at all — just the call that got us out there.
No amounts on purpose — these are the rules, whatever the job turns out to be.

More specific questions

Wi-Fi & Internet Fixes

I pay for gigabit but only get 90 Mbps on my phone. Am I being ripped off?

Probably not. Most phones and laptops can't pull gigabit over Wi-Fi at any distance, and a lot of older routers cap out well below the plan you're paying for. We measure at the wall and over Wi-Fi separately, so you can see exactly where the speed is being lost — and whether you're paying for a plan your equipment can't use.

Will a Wi-Fi extender fix my dead zone?

Usually it makes things worse. A classic extender halves your bandwidth and creates a second network your devices cling to long after they should have switched. A properly placed mesh node or a wired access point solves the same problem without the tradeoff.

Do you work with Starlink?

Yes — siting, mounting, alignment and getting it onto your home network properly. Obstruction is the whole game with Starlink, and out past Vail, Corona de Tucson and the far side of Marana it often beats what's available on the ground.

Ethernet & Structured Wiring

My house is block construction. Can you still run cable?

Usually yes, but the route matters more. Interior block walls can't be fished the way drywall can, so we generally come down from the attic into interior partition walls, or use surface raceway where there's genuinely no path. We'll tell you which one your house needs after we look at it, not before.

Is Cat6 enough, or should I get Cat6a?

For nearly every home, Cat6 handles multi-gig at household run lengths and costs meaningfully less. Cat6a is worth it for long runs, dense commercial installs, or if you want 10-gig headroom you'll grow into. We'll say which one your specific run wants.

Why won't you give me a price over the phone?

Because it wouldn't be a real price. The cost of a drop depends on the path, and the path depends on your attic, your wall construction and where you want the jack. We'd rather walk it and give you a number that holds.

Security Cameras & Doorbells

Can you add cameras to the system I already have?

Usually. Most systems expand cleanly if you stay in the same ecosystem, and we can often rescue a half-finished install someone else abandoned. Send us the brand and model and we'll tell you what it'll take.

Do I need a subscription?

Not necessarily. Wired systems with a local NVR record without any monthly fee. Most battery and doorbell brands need a subscription to store more than a few clips. We'll tell you which category your system is in before you buy it, not after.

Do you install alarm systems?

No. Cameras, doorbells and smart locks yes — monitored burglar alarms no. That's regulated separately in Arizona and needs its own credential. We'll make sure everything else in your house works alongside whatever alarm provider you use.

Smart Home Setup

I've bought a pile of smart gear and never set it up. Can you just do it?

That's one of our most common calls. Bring it all out of the closet, we'll install what's worth installing, tell you honestly what to return, and get the rest onto one app.

Will this still work if the internet goes down?

Partly, and it depends on the device. Locks and switches keep working locally; voice commands and remote access don't. We'll set things up so an outage is an inconvenience rather than a lockout, and tell you which pieces depend on the cloud.

Is a smart thermostat really worth it in Tucson?

It's the one we recommend most, specifically because of the cooling season. The savings come from the schedule and the setbacks, though, not the device — so it's worth having it configured rather than just installed.

TV Mounting & Home Theater

Can you mount a TV on my block wall?

Yes, and it's one of the most common calls we get in Tucson. Block needs a hammer drill and masonry anchors rated for the load — done properly it's actually a stronger mount than drywall and studs.

Can you hide the power cord in the wall?

Yes, with a recessed power kit that's built for it. Running a normal extension cord inside a wall is a code and fire issue, so we use a proper kit that relocates an outlet behind the TV.

Do you bring the mount, or should I buy one?

Either. If you've already got one we'll use it, assuming it's rated for your TV and your wall. If not, tell us the size and where it's going and we'll bring one that fits.

Computer & Device Help

Is my computer worth fixing or should I replace it?

We'll tell you straight. An SSD and more RAM can make a six-year-old machine feel new for a fraction of a replacement. But if the board is failing or the repair approaches the cost of a new machine, we'll say that too — and help you move everything over instead.

I got a full-screen warning telling me to call Microsoft. What now?

It's a scam, and it's designed to look exactly like a real system warning. Don't call the number. If you already called, or gave them remote access or a payment, call us — that's a specific cleanup with specific steps, and the sooner it starts the better.

Can you get my files off a dead computer?

Often yes, if the drive itself is intact. We'll try in your home first. If the drive has physical damage it needs a clean-room recovery lab, and we'll tell you that rather than making it worse by trying.

Patient Tech Help

I feel silly asking about something this basic.

Please don't. There is no question we haven't been asked, and there's no such thing as too basic. The people who designed these devices made choices that confuse everybody — you're just the one being honest about it.

Can my daughter arrange this from out of state?

Yes, and it happens constantly. Family often books and pays remotely while we work with the person in their home. We can update whoever you'd like us to afterward, with your say-so.

Do you go to Green Valley and SaddleBrooke?

Yes — Green Valley, SaddleBrooke, Sahuarita, Oro Valley and the rest of the Tucson area. A good part of this work is out that way.

Small Business IT

Do we have to sign a monthly contract?

No. Call us when you need us and pay for the time. If you'd rather have priority response and regular check-ins we offer a plan for that, but it's optional and it's not the only way to work with us.

Our POS vendor says it's our internet. Our internet company says it's the POS.

Extremely familiar. We'll test both sides and find out which one is right, which usually ends the argument in about twenty minutes.

Can you help us move from personal Gmail to real business email?

Yes, and it's one of the better upgrades a small business can make. We'll get you onto your own domain, migrate the existing mail, and set it up on everyone's phone.

Snowbird & Rental Tech

Can you check on the house while we're gone?

We set the house up so you can check on it yourself from anywhere, which is what most people actually want. If something needs hands on it, we're local and you can call us.

What's the most important thing for an empty Tucson house?

Temperature and water. A failed AC in a closed-up house in July does real damage, and a slow leak that runs for four months is worse. Sensors for both are inexpensive and they're the first thing we set up.

We rent on Airbnb. Can guests get in without us?

Yes — that's what smart locks are for. Each booking gets its own code that starts and expires on its own, so nobody's meeting guests with a key at 11pm and no code outlives the stay.
